The MBU-20/P series oxygen mask

by: Ron Kraan, Sven Scheffers
MBU-20/P
The MBU-20/P Mask is designed for use in Pressure Breathing for G (PBG) equipped high performance fighter/attack aircraft.

A newly designed mask, the MBU-20/P was developed for PBG breathing schedules up to the 60,000 foot level and features a side entry oxygen supply hose designed to lower flow resistance.

Flight tested and specified as one component of the USAF COMBAT EDGE system, the MBU-20/P is currently being issued to all F-15 & F-16 aircrew and will soon be issued to USN F/A-18 aircrew. It provides PBG capability and reduces the probability of G-induced loss of consciousness (GLOC) during tactical maneuvers.

The lightweight low profile mask contour provides optimal mask/face sealing capabilities while minimizing visibility restrictions.

Separate Inhalation and Exhalation Valves minimize breathing resistance and reduce aircrew fatigue.

The mask utilizes a lightweight composite hardshell that may be custom-trimmed to allow optimum comfort while maintaining appropriate fit.

A silicone rubber facepiece incorporates a reflective seal design for optimum sealing capabilities, and a chin cup which provides mask stability and retention during high speed ejection plus injury protection following high altitude escape.

A mask supply hose design is utilized which is similar to the standard silicone rubber molded hose, but also incorporates the PBG helmet bladder supply hose and male quick-disconnect connector which interfaces with the female connector attached to the helmet.

The MBU-20/P Oxygen Mask is available in four sizes to fit the 3rd through 97th percentile United States male aircrew member.

MBU-21/P
Nothing is known at this time of the mask designated MBU-21/P.

MBU-22/P
Intended for use with the F-22 flight gear ensemble, the Combat Edge type oxygen mask is to be used with the Helmet Industries (Alpha) HGU-86/P.

MBU-23 & 24/P Oxygen Mask
The MBU-23/P and MBU-24/P Oxygen Masks are designed for use in US Navy tactical aircraft for both Pressure Breathing for G (PBG) and Non-PBG applications. The MBU-23/P is designed for US Navy and Marine Corps Non-PBG applications as a direct replacement for the MBU-14/P through MBU-17/P Oxygen Masks. The MBU-23/P incorporates an Electret Microphone and the necessary connectors to mate with the oxygen regulator and the HGU-68/P or HGU-85/P Helmet Assemblies.

The MBU-24/P Oxygen Mask was developed to be worn with the HGU-87/P Helmet as a component of the Pressure Breathing for G system comprising the Navy COMBAT EDGE Aircrew Protective System for US Navy and Marine Corps F/A-18 Aircrew.

Similar to the MBU-20/P and GENTEX HA/LP® Oxygen Masks, the MBU-23/P and MBU-24/P Masks provide +600 knot windblast protection. The lightweight, low profile mask design provides optimal PPB sealing capabilities. Separate Inhalation and Exhalation Valves minimize breathing resistance and reduces aircrew fatigue.

The lightweight composite hardshell serves as a semi-rigid support for the faceseal to contain PPB pressures while also providing a mounting platform for the various components. The hardshell may be custom-trimmed to allow optimum comfort while maintaining appropriate fit. The silicone rubber facepiece incorporates a reflective seal design to optimize sealing capabilities, and a chin cup which provides injury protection following high speed or high altitude ejection.

The MBU-23/P and MBU-24/P can be configured with either a GENTEX Electret Microphone or M-101 and a mask mounted amplifier. Each mask assembly is configured with a US Navy compatible communications cord. The MBU-24/P incorporates a PBG Bladder Supply Hose with a 2-Pin Bayonet Connector to allow the mask to easily be separated from the helmet during shipboard pre-flight operations.

Both masks are configured with MBU-20/P COMBAT EDGE Bayonets and are available in four sizes to fit the 3rd through 97th percentile male aircrew member.

HA/LP Oxygen Mask
Gentex High Altitude/Low Profile (HA/LP®) Oxygen Masks are designed for use in both Pressure Breathing for G (PBG) equipped high performance fighter/attack aircraft and Non-PBG equipped aircraft.

The HA/LP Oxygen Masks are derivatives of the USAF MBU-20/P Oxygen Mask. HA/LP PBG Masks provide a bladder supply hose that connects the mask assembly to an occipital bladder in the helmet to provide automatic mask tensioning during high G flight. The Non-PBG HA/LP Oxygen Masks are direct replacements for both MBU-12/P and MBU-5/P Masks.

Similar to the MBU-20/P, the HA/LP Oxygen Masks provide a +600 knot windblast protection, are a lightweight, low profile mask contour which provides optimal mask/face sealing capabilities while minimizing visibility restrictions.

Separate Inhalation and Exhalation Valves minimize breathing resistance and reduce aircrew fatigue.

The masks utilize a lightweight composite hardshell that may be custom-trimmed to allow comfort while maintaining appropriate fit.

A silicone rubber facepiece incorporates a reflective seal design for optimum sealing capabilities, and a chin cup which provides mask stability and retention during high speed ejection plus injury protection following high altitude escape.

The silicone breathing gas hose for Non-PBG HA/LP Masks can quickly and easily be replaced with a hose that incorporates a tap off for a PBG helmet bladder supply hose. This enables a mask to be configured from non-PBG to PBG applications. The masks can be configured with a variety of microphones including the GENTEX Modified M-169A/AIC, Electret (US Navy compatible communications), and a NATO compatible microphone. Depending on the microphone used and aircraft type, the appropriate communication cord is provided.

An exhalation valve occluder is incorporated on the compensated exhalation valve to assist the aircrew in performing Valsalva. This method is in addition to the standard method of performing Valsalva.

Each mask is configured with MBU-20/P COMBAT EDGE Bayonets and an Anti-Suffocation Valve is available and can be incorporated on any HA/LP Oxygen Mask.

The HA/LP Oxygen Masks are available in four sizes to fit the 3rd through 97th percentile United States male aircrew member. A fifth size has been developed by GENTEX for fitting down to the 3rd percentile female aviator.

The MiG & Sukhoi Oxygen Mask is the latest variation on the High Altitude/Low Profile (HA/LP) Oxygen Mask. This Plug & Play system was adapted to interface with Russian Aircraft Platforms for:

MiG 15, 17, 21, 23 & 29

Sukhoi 17, 20, 22, 24, 25 & 27

Special features are:

3-pin/2-pin oxygen hose to regulator adapter

Communication cord adapter

The German Airforce flying the MiG-29G and GT at Laage AB developed a similar version with a Soviet mask type oxygen valve installed. Although not official approved, it remains in use.

FAS Mask
Another use of the HA/LP mask, is the FAS NBC project developed by Gentex for the German Airforce. Intended for use in the F-4F and Tornado aircraft, the face shield incorperates a HA/LP style mask.

HALO
Yet another special version of the MBU-20/P series mask, is the use for high altitude parachute jumps. Being basically a facepiece without the large hose, it is fitted with a small hose for oxygen supply.
